Broadway Bound: Patti LuPone & Sherie Rene Scott are 'Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown'

I love Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, Pedro Almodóvar's 1988 comedy starring Antonio Banderas. And I'm looking forward to seeing the new musical version that is scheduled to open on Broadway at the Belasco Theatre on November 4 (previews begin October 2). Some of the impressive stars in the cast were announced yesterday:

Sherie Rene Scott as Pepa, a voice-over actress
Brian Stokes Mitchell as her philandering boyfriend, Iván
Patti LuPone as Iván's mentally insane wife, Lucia
Nikki Graff Lanzarone as Marisa, the fiancée of Iván and Lucia's son, Carlos
de'Adre Aziza as Paulina, a lawyer
Mary Beth Peil as a concierge
And Danny Burstein as a mambo-loving taxi driver

The roles of Carlos (played by Banderas in the film) and Candela, Pepa's unstable best friend, have not been cast yet. The musical features a book by Jeffrey Lane and music and lyrics by David Yazbek (The Full Monty, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels), and it will be directed by Bartlett Sher, who won a 2008 Tony Award for his direction of the Broadway revival of South Pacific. I do find it interesting that LuPone and Mitchell will be working together this year after all since he withdrew (due to a scheduling conflict) from next month's Ravinia production of Annie Get Your Gun, in which he was to play Frank Butler to her Annie Oakley. Although I'm sure Mitchell will be great in Women, I have to wonder if Banderas was ever considered for the role of Iván. Hopefully this new musical version will be as delightful as the cinematic one (whose trailer you can watch below).
