Top 10 Tuesday of Groovy Tunes: The Carpenters are on "Top of the World"

Each week I feature 10 groovy tunes that reached the Top 10 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart during the last 50+ years. You can vote for your three favorites, and the five with the most votes move on to the following week when five new songs will be added to the list.

Cher's "Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves" and Barbra & Donna's "No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)" were in a tie at the top last week, each receiving 22 votes out of the 145 cast. Lulu and KC and the Sunshine Band also tied for fifth place, allowing them both to remain on the list. Meanwhile, the Carpenters' "(They Long to Be) Close to You" celebrated its 20th week in the Top 10, but now they will have to face their toughest competition yet - themselves (with their 1973 hit, "Top of the World"). You can vote for your favorites in the poll below.

1) "Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves"/Cher (Last Week #1, Week 5) - #5 the week of December 4, 1971

1) "No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)"/Barbra Streisand & Donna Summer (Week 2) - #1 the week of December 1, 1979

3) "MacArthur Park"/Donna Summer (LW #4, W4) - #2 the week of December 2, 1978

4) "(They Long to Be) Close to You"/Carpenters (LW #5, W20) - 17 weeks on Billboard's Hot 100 chart in 1970

5) "To Sir With Love"/Lulu (LW #2, W7) - #4 the week of December 2, 1967

5) "That's The Way (I Like It)"/KC and the Sunshine Band (Week 2) - #2 the week of November 29, 1975

7) "Daydream Believer"/The Monkees (DEBUT) - #1 the week of December 2, 1967

8) "Love Child"/The Supremes (DEBUT) - #1 the week of November 30, 1968

9) "Top of the World"/Carpenters (DEBUT) - #1 the week of December 1, 1973

10) "You Don't Bring Me Flowers"/Barbra Streisand & Neil Diamond (DEBUT) - #1 the week of December 2, 1978

I'm embarassed to say that I actually owned EVERY SINGLE one of those records and loved them all.

If I have to pick a favorite from this list, it will have to be "Enough Is Enough". But there will never be another Karen Carpenter!

Ohmygoodness!! This is almost too good to believe. A chance to vote for Karen & Richard TWICE in the same poll?!? You can bet I did! =)

And let's add Lulu back into the mix to round out the top three!

I'm almost giddy...

The thing I love most about this weekly pop-fest is it just serves to expose how few songs these days can compare to these... It's the Carpenters, Babs & Donna and "Daydream Believer" for me! Jx

D&D - You have nothing to be embarrassed about. I'm sure many of my readers owned and loved those records - including myself.

Jon - I definitely agree with you about how few songs these days can compare.
