Remembering Annette Funicello 1942 - 2013

Actress Annette Funicello, who died earlier today at age 70 from complications due to multiple sclerosis, began her career in 1955 as one of the original "Mouseketeers" on TV's The Mickey Mouse Club. She also found success as a singer with such pop record hits as "Tall Paul" (1959) and "Pineapple Princess" (1960), and she appeared in many films, including The Shaggy Dog (1959), Babes in Toyland (1961), Beach Party (1963) with her frequent co-star Frankie Avalon, Muscle Beach Party (1964), Bikini Beach (1964), Pajama Party (1964), Beach Blanket Bingo (1965), The Monkey's Uncle (1965), How to Stuff a Wild Bikini (1965) and Back to the Beach (1987). Beginning in 1979, Funicello also starred in a series of TV commercials for Skippy peanut butter.

Below are some videos I've selected to celebrate her life and career.

She and Bob Hope perform "Jamaica Ska" and she sings "The Clyde" on The Bob Hope Thanksgiving Special on November 20, 1964.

She performs "Pajama Party" in the 1964 film.

She and Frankie Avalon perform "Beach Blanket Bingo" during the opening credits of the 1965 film.

She performs "The Monkey's Uncle" with the Beach Boys during the opening credits of the 1965 film.

She and Frankie Avalon guest star on Pee-wee's Playhouse Christmas Special on December 21, 1988.

How sad. I loved Annette when I was a little boy and found a common thread with her after my mother was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.

Annette was a beautiful, friendly and talented woman who rose above her illness. RIP, Annette!
