Groovy Guy of the Month: Peter Calandra

This month's Groovy Guy is actor, model and personal trainer Peter Calandra, whom I'm sure many of my readers are familiar with from two sexy short films - Il Palazzo for designer John Saint-Denis's candles and vintage furniture and Saturday Morning for designer Johnathon Abrielle's sheets. Recently Peter reprised his role as Paolo in the sequel to Il Palazzo, The Paris Flat, which is up for Best Gay Ad on a British YouTube channel (click here to Like/vote for it).

I am delighted to have the handsome Mr. Calandra here on the Dish to answer a few questions about his life and, of course, pop culture.

How did you get cast in Il Palazzo?
My friend, Brian Rodda, the producer of the film, saw another short film that I had done and thought I would be right for Il Palazzo. Actually, in a "it's a small world after all" way, it turned out that John Saint-Denis, the owner of JSD Vintage, and I had worked together previously long time ago. Funny how things work out. Certainly, I liked the romantic story that John and Brian had come up with, but I had no idea that the finished product was going to look so beautiful, which was also due to our director, Nino Mancuso. I definitely didn't expect the kind of overwhelming response it got. Just amazing.

Did you enjoy making Saturday Morning? And do you sleep in the nude on Johnathon Abrielle sheets every night?
Johnathon is a friend and great photographer so I was very flattered when he asked me to do that video. I was a little nervous about it but understood and could visualize what he was going for so I went with it. I loved the black-and-white Herb Ritts feel of it. And as far as what I sleep in every night, I'll leave that to your readers' imagination.

As a personal trainer, how do you help people get the body they want? And what is one of your favorite fitness trends?
My specialty is really guiding clients through a workout that makes sense for them. I try to find the balance between what they need and what they want. Trends come and go - consistency and balance are key, but I do keep up with current trends and mix them into workouts.

What is your own weekly workout routine in order to keep so fit?
I don't think I realize just how hard I work out, and I feel like there are certainly others at the gym who are working out way harder. I hate burpees. I do them, but it's a love/hate thing. But I guess I do push myself hard and I do watch what I eat though I'm not as militant as some there either. It's all moderation. It's just been a part of my life for so long now that I just do it.

My five favorite TV shows of all time are:
Currently I'm loving Nurse Jackie, Mad Men, Modern Family and Downton Abbey, but if we're talking my faves of all time, they would be:

Thirtysomething - I loved that cast. The writing! Ken Olin!

Dynasty - Where do I start?

Sex and the City - I love those girls! That show never failed to have you laughing one minute and crying the next. I'm also very Carrie Bradshaw about New York, and I was there for most of the time that series was on so it brings back my own memories.

Family - I had such a crush on Kristy McNichol! But what really stuck with me, even as a kid, and I think what grounded the show was Sada Thompson as the mother, Kate Lawrence. She just had this authority and such strength but there was always this warmth, too.

Maude - And then there's Maude. A trailblazer with pantsuits!

Five of my favorite movies are:
All About Eve
Vertigo
Imitation Of Life
Funny Girl
Singin' in the Rain

If I were asked to choose the Sexiest Man Alive, it would be:
I would have to say Tom Ford. Not only is he still sexy, but he has and continues to define what we think of as sexy, be it clothes or design. I mean who didn't want to live in Colin Firth's house in A Single Man or Julianne Moore's, not to mention how ridiculously fantastic they both looked. Oh, and Ryan Gosling.

If I could have anyone in the world - living or dead - be a guest at my dinner party, I would invite the following three people:
If I could pick anyone living or dead, first off I would have to say my Grandma. Diana Vreeland would be like inviting Auntie Mame. And it's a tie - I think Little Edie would be fascinating, to say the least, but I couldn't pass up a chance to talk with Oprah.

What's next for Peter Calandra?
Honestly, I'm a working actor, but I try living in the moment and embracing every day as it comes. Corny? Maybe. But I'm at a place where flexibility in my life really works. I love theatre, film, TV. Bring it all. I'm ready! Oh, and I want to direct.
