Remembering Matthew Cowles 1944 - 2014

Actor Matthew Cowles, who died Thursday at age 69, was best known for his role as Billy Clyde Tuggle on the daytime soap opera, All My Children, for which he received two Daytime Emmy Award nominations. He originally played the character from 1977 to 1980 and later returned in 1984, 1989-90 and 2013. Cowles also appeared on the daytime soaps, A World Apart (1970-71) as Susan Sarandon's brother, Loving (1986-87) and The Bold and the Beautiful (1997).

He and Al Pacino made their film debuts in the 1969 comedy-drama, Me, Natalie, starring Patty Duke. And his Broadway credits include Edward Albee's Malcolm (1966), The Time of Your Life (1969) and Tennessee Williams' Sweet Bird of Youth (1975) with Irene Worth and Christopher Walken. Cowles is survived by his wife, actress Christine Baranski, whom he married in 1983, and their two daughters.

Below you can watch Matthew Cowles in a 1984 episode of All My Children, featuring Christine Baranski as Billy Clyde's girlfriend, Jewel Maniscalo.

Billy Clyde was one of the greatest characters on AMC. Sorry to hear he passed. My thoughts and prayers to his wife Christine Baranski and his daughters.

Sad to hear this, didn't know he was ailing. I vividly remember him from my many years of watching AMC. He gave poor Donna and Estelle such trouble.

I knew he was married to Christine Baranski and thought them an odd match, at least visually, but they were apparently very happy which was great. Sorry for her loss.
