10 Groovy Things to Do in April starring Steven Pasquale, Laura Osnes & Audra McDonald

Since there are so many groovy plays, musicals, concerts and events, this is my monthly list to help promote a few of them (click on a title for more information or to purchase tickets):

1) Living on Love
Broadway previews begin April 1. Opens April 20 at the Longacre Theatre.
This new comedy with music is a loving tribute to the world of opera, and it features one of its greatest stars, Renée Fleming, making her Broadway debut. Three-time Tony-winning director Kathleen Marshall (Anything Goes) and two-time Tony-winning writer Joe Di Pietro (Nice Work If You Can Get It) have created this hilarious celebration of music, marriage and celebrity. Fleming stars alongside Tony nominee Douglas Sills (The Scarlet Pimpernel), critically acclaimed actor Jerry O'Connell (Jerry Maguire) and Emmy nominee Anna Chlumsky (HBO's Veep).

2) Beckie Menzie & Tom Michael in It's About Time
Every Saturday in April (4, 11, 18 & 25) at Davenport's Cabaret in Chicago
In their brand new annual April show, the award-winning duo explore songs about the many concepts of "time" - some people waste it, some try to reverse it, some don't have nearly enough of it and some can't keep it at all. It’s a show with songs by such writers as Cyndi Lauper, Duke Ellington, Jimmy Webb, Stephen Schwartz, Miranda Lambert, Sammy Cahn and many more.

3) Grounded
Off-Broadway previews begin April 7. Opens April 23 at the Public Theater.
Academy Award winner Anne Hathaway (Les Misérables) returns to The Public in George Brant's spellbinding, ripped-from-the-headlines play, Grounded. An ace fighter pilot reassigned to a remote-controlled drone faces twelve-hour shifts hunting targets from her Air Force trailer followed by twelve in the suburbs with her family in this new play about the complicated consequences of waging war without leaving home. Named one of the Best Plays of the year by both London's The Evening Standard and The Guardian, Grounded comes to The Public's intimate Anspacher Theater under the masterful direction of two-time Tony Award winner Julie Taymor (The Lion King).

4) Rodgers and Hammerstein's Carousel
April 10 - May 3 at the Lyric Opera of Chicago
This new production is directed and choreographed by Tony Award-winner Rob Ashford, and the all-star cast includes Steven Pasquale (CBS's The Good Wife, The Bridges of Madison County), Laura Osnes (Cinderella, Bonnie and Clyde), Jarrod Emick (Damn Yankees, Ring of Fire), Charlotte d'Amboise (Chicago, A Chorus Line) and Tony Roberts (Annie Hall).

5) The 29th Annual Easter Bonnet Competition
April 20 & 21 at NYC's Minskoff Theatre
This highly anticipated annual event features the companies of Broadway, Off-Broadway and national touring productions offering skits, songs and dances as well as elaborately designed bonnets created specially for the event. Since 1987, the Easter Bonnet Competition has raised more than $58 million for Broadway Cares.

6) Audra McDonald with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra
April 25 at Hilbert Circle Theatre in Indianapolis
Five-time Tony Award winner and Grammy winning artist Audra McDonald joins the ISO for this one-night-only special event. The Broadway legend and Live From Lincoln Center host dazzles audiences with classic show tunes and with songs from her latest album, Go Back Home.

7) Broadway @ The Nourse featuring Vanessa Williams
April 25 at The Nourse in San Francisco
Vanessa Williams performs with Sirius XM Radio star Seth Rudetsky as pianist/host and special guest Varla Jean Merman. The concert benefits the San Francisco Aids Foundation, Project Open Hand and the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus.

8) Jinkx Monsoon and Peaches Christ in Return to Gray Gardens
April 25 at Mason Hall at NYC's Baruch Performing Arts Center
RuPaul's Drag Race sensation Jinkx Monsson and San Francisco drag legend Peaches Christ star in the New York Premiere of Return to Gray Gardens, a theatrical comedy that pays homage to the acclaimed documentary film, Grey Gardens. This original stage show, written and directed by Joshua Grannell, also features Mink Stole (who has appeared in almost all of John Waters' films) and Thomas Dekker (Fox's Backstrom) in his Off-Broadway debut.

9) FOLLIES in Concert
April 28 at London's Royal Albert Hall
For one matinee and one evening performance only, FOLLIES in Concert makes a spectacular and rare return to the UK. With a wealth of well-known songs, including "Losing My Mind", "Broadway Baby" and "I'm Still Here", this iconic and much-loved show is being performed in celebration of composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim's 85th birthday this year. The all-star cast includes Christine Baranski, Anita Dobson, Ruthie Henshall, Lorna Luft, Stefanie Powers and Betty Buckley.

10) Darren Criss in Hedwig and the Angry Inch
April 29 - July 19 at the Belasco Theatre on Broadway
Darren Criss (Glee, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying) returns to Broadway for a 12-week engagement in the 2014 Best Musical Revival.
