Top Ten David Letterman Moments of 1983

In honor of David Letterman's final Late Show on May 20 - and to celebrate his 33 years as the longest-serving late night talk show host in TV history - I thought it would be fun to feature a series of Top Ten Lists of some of his most memorable moments. Click here to see previous Top Ten Lists - and now let's look back at 1983 (in chronological order):

1) Sandra Bernhard makes her first appearance on Late Night on February 21, 1983, and Sly Stone performs "Dance to the Music".

2. On February 23, 1983, Dave invites poorly-seated audience member Cathy Renault to tell a monologue joke and sit onstage. His guests include Andy Kaufman, wrestling great Freddie Blassie, and Alba Ballard, who shows off her costumed birds.

3. Shelley Winters is Dave's guest on April 27, 1983.

4. On May 24, 1983, it's "Camping with Barry White Night". Jacqueline Bisset and Bobcat Goldthwait - in his network television debut - are also guests.

5. Pee-wee Herman is Dave's guest on July 5, 1983.

6. Simon & Garfunkel are Dave's guests on July 25, 1983.

7. Sandra Bernhard is Dave's guest on August 31, 1983.

8. On November 15, 1983, it's the very first "Custom Show", in which Dr. Ruth Westheimer is selected as the first guest, edging out Teri Garr.

9. On November 16, 1983, Larry "Bud" Melman greets bus passengers arriving at the New York City Port Authority with hot towels. Also, Andrea Martin is Dave's guest.

10. Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert are Dave's guests on November 21, 1983.
