10 Groovy Things to Do in January starring Kristin Chenoweth and Matt Doyle
Since there are so many groovy plays, musicals, concerts and events, this is my monthly list to help promote a few of them (click on a title for more information or to purchase tickets):
1) Eating Raoul: In Concert starring The Skivvies
January 5 at NYC's 54 Below
Nick Cearley and Lauren Molina of The Skivvies will lead an all-star cast in a concert of Eating Raoul, the 1992 musical based on the 1982 cult classic film about a married couple who resort to killing swingers for their money.
2) Priscilla, Queen of the Desert the Musical
January 12 - February 12 at the Pride Arts Center in Chicago
Pride Films and Plays presents the Chicago premiere of the Tony Award-winning musical, which will be the company’s inaugural production in their two-stage Pride Arts Center. Co-directed by Executive Director David Zak and Artistic Associate Derek Van Barham, the production will star Honey West, Jordan Phelps and Luke Meierdiercks as the trio of performers – two drag queens and a transgender woman - who traverse the Australian outback in a a battered old bus nicknamed “Priscilla”.
3) The Temperamentals
January 13 - February 18 at Chicago's Theater Wit
About Face Theatre continues its 2016-17 Season with the Chicago premiere of Jon Marans’ Off-Broadway hit about the founding of the Mattachine Society, America's first LGBT rights organization, and the love affair of two of its founding members. Directed by Artistic Director Andrew Volkoff, the play features Paul Fagen, Lane Anthony Flores, Kyle Hatley, Rob Lindley and Alex Weisman.
4) Kids in the Hall: Brain Candy Live Staged Reading
January 14 at San Francisco's Castro Theatre
As part of the 16th Annual SF Sketchfest, the Kids in the Hall (Dave Foley, Bruce McCulloch, Kevin McDonald, Mark McKinney, Scott Thompson) bring a very special staged reading of their beloved 1996 cult classic, accompanied by narration, music and the occasional video clip!
5) Kristin Chenoweth: The Art of Elegance Tour
January 21 at American Music Theatre in Lancaster, PA
The Tony Award-winning Broadway star launches a concert tour featuring musical theatre favorites as well as tunes from her first album of American Songbook classics, The Art of Elegance. Click here for other tour dates.
6) Matt Doyle
January 21 at Joe's Pub in NYC
The Broadway actor (The Book of Mormon, War Horse, Spring Awakening) returns to Joe's Pub to celebrate his full-length album, Uncontrolled. He is set to appear as Anthony in the upcoming New York revival of Sweeney Todd, which begins previews on February 14 at the Barrow Street Theatre (click here for tickets).
7) Audra McDonald & Will Swenson
January 27 at The Lesher Center for the Arts in San Francisco
The husband-and-wife duo will perform an evening of solos and duets, ranging from classic show tunes to contemporary works by emerging musical theatre composers.

9) Charles Busch in That Girl, That Boy
January 29 & 30 at the Pride Arts Center in Chicago
The Tony nominee and drag legend brings his cabaret act to Chicago for the first time. Accompanied by his dashing longtime musical director, Tom Judson, Charles combines hilarious personal reminiscence, character sketches and superb storytelling through song into one glittering and glamorous evening.
10) Isaac Mizrahi
January 31 - February 11 at NYC's Café Carlyle
The fashion designer and Project Runway All Stars judge, who has previously performed cabaret at Joe’s Pub, West Bank Café and City Winery, makes his debut at Café Carlyle.
