The 2017 Groovy Awards

As 2017 comes to an end, it's time once again to sit back and reflect upon the best (and the worst) of the year. So here are my annual awards for the grooviest books, television, web series, theater, comedy, music and movies:

Grooviest Book: Logical Family: A Memoir by Armistead Maupin
Runner-Up: Theft by Finding: Diaries 1977-2002 by David Sedaris

Grooviest Book Reprint: My Way of Life by Joan Crawford (1971)

Grooviest Comedy Series: Schitt's Creek
Runners-Up: Grace & Frankie and Younger
Honorable Mention: Better Things

Grooviest Drama Series: The Leftovers
Runners-Up: Feud: Bette and Joan
Honorable Mention: Riverdale

Grooviest TV Return: Will & Grace
Runner-Up: Twin Peaks

Grooviest Guilty Pleasure: Dynasty
Runner-Up: The Haves and the Have Nots

Grooviest Daytime Soap: Days of Our Lives
Runner-Up: General Hospital

Grooviest Talk Show: The Late Show with Stephen Colbert

Most Unnecessary TV: ABC's Dirty Dancing remake

Worst Cancellation: The Real O'Neals
Runners-Up: American Crime and Playing House

Grooviest TV on DVD Release: One Day at a Time: The Complete Series
Runner-Up: Rhoda: The Final Season
Honorable Mention: Angie: The Complete Collection

The Groovy TV Series Hall of Fame: The first show to be selected for this honor is The Mary Tyler Moore Show (1970-77), which won 29 Emmy Awards including Outstanding Comedy Series three years in a row (1975-77).

Grooviest Web Series: New York Is Dead
Runner-Up: Successful People
Honorable Mention: Ave 43

The Groovy Web Series Hall of Fame: Submissions Only

Grooviest Play: The Temperamentals (Chicago's About Face Theatre, January 2017)

Grooviest Musical: 42nd Street (Drury Lane Theatre in Oakbrook Terrace, November 2017)
Runner-Up: An American in Paris (National Tour, August 2017)
Honorable Mention: Honeymoon in Vegas (Marriott Theatre in Lincolnshire, October 2017)

Grooviest Staged Concert: Little Me (Chicago's Porchlight Music Theatre, February 2017)

Worst Stage Production of 2017: Escape to Margaritaville (November 2017)
Unless you're a big Jimmy Buffett fan and/or drunk, I doubt that you will enjoy this disappointing musical when it begins Broadway previews on February 16 (it had its pre-Broadway tryout in Chicago).

Grooviest Comedy Performance: Paula Poundstone (November 2017)

Grooviest Concert: Herb Alpert & Lani Hall (April 2017)

Grooviest Music Video: Pink's "Beautiful Trauma" (with Channing Tatum)

Grooviest LGBTQ Music Video: Brandon Stansell's "Never Know"

Grooviest Cover: Robbie Williams' "9 to 5"

Grooviest Movie: Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

Sorry, Stonewalltop, but I didn't see any of those films. However, they might show up on next year's "Grooviest 2017 Movie That I Saw in 2018".

Hey, HG, you should start watching Days of Our Lives - the three actors are involved in a gay love triangle. Happy New Year!
