Groovy 10th Birthday Flashback to 2008

Time does fly when you're having fun.

On August 19, 2008, DEEP DISH was born, and I never would have imagined that I'd still be writing AND enjoying it 10 years later. I want to thank all of my readers for their continued support during this groovy blogging adventure, and to commemorate this milestone, I thought it would be fun to feature 25 of my favorite posts from 2008 (click on a title to read the complete post).

Remembering Aretha Franklin 1942 - 2018

Singer-songwriter Aretha Franklin, who died Thursday at age 76, sold over 75 million records and won 18 Grammy Awards during her long career as the "Queen of Soul". She received many honors, including a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (1979), a 1987 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (as the first female performer), the Kennedy Center Honors (1994), the National Medal of Arts (1999) and the Presidential Medal of Freedom (2005).

Below I've selected some videos to celebrate Franklin's life and career.

Groovy Musical Challenge #10: Hello, Dolly!

My husband Michael nominated me on Facebook to share 10 musicals that made an impact on me the first time I saw or performed in them and that I would see again and again. I also must post the Playbill and nominate a new person each day (today's lucky person is James Juliano).

My 10th groovy musical is Hello, Dolly!, which I saw twice in a 30th anniversary touring production starring Carol Channing in August 1994 (in Chicago) and in June 1995 (in Milwaukee). The cast also included Jay Garner, Michael DeVries and Florence Lacey. And I snagged the above Playbill in October 1995 during the show's Broadway run.

Groovy Musical Challenge #9: Wonderful Town

My husband Michael nominated me on Facebook to share 10 musicals that made an impact on me the first time I saw or performed in them and that I would see again and again. I also must post the Playbill and nominate a new person each day (today's lucky person is Jonathan Lewis).

My ninth groovy musical is Wonderful Town, which I saw on November 12, 2004, in a Broadway revival starring Brooke Shields, Jennifer Hope Wills, Gregg Edelman and Kate Baldwin. I also saw a New York City Opera production on November 12, 1994, starring Kay McClelland, Crista Moore and Richard Muenz as well as a 2016 Goodman Theatre production starring Bri Sudia and Lauren Molina.
