10 Groovy Things to Do in August starring Steve Grand and Megan Mullally

Since there are so many groovy plays, musicals, concerts and events, this is my monthly list to help promote a few of them (click on a title for more information or to purchase tickets):

1) The Bridges of Madison County
August 1 - 18 at the Williamstown Theatre Festival
Bartlett Sher (South Pacific, The Light in the Piazza) directs this World Premiere musical based on the 1995 film and the 1992 best-selling novel. With a book by the Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Marsha Norman and music and lyrics by Tony winner Jason Robert Brown (Parade), it tells the story of Francesca Johnson (played by Elena Shaddow), a small-town 1960s Iowa housewife who has an affair with Robert Kincaid (Steven Pasquale), a photographer from National Geographic.

2) Shelly Markham's CD Release Performance
August 4 at Davenport's Piano Bar in Chicago
Shelly Markham, the award-winning composer of the gay marriage anthem, "It's About Time" and a contributor to the long-running Naked Boys Singing, celebrates the release of his debut CD, Things I've Learned Along The Way, with a special performance. Joining him will be two of Chicago's most popular performers, Anne and Mark Burnell. Markham is also the accompanist of Andrea Marcovicci, who returns to Davenport's with her show, Moonlight Cocktail, July 31 - August 5.

3) Hell in a Handbag Productions presents The Birds
August 8 - September 15 at Chicago's Berger Park Coach House
Hell in a Handbag's adaptation of The Birds is both a ridiculous parody of the classic Hitchcock film, and a look inside the mind of newcomer Tippi Hedren with author and American social critic Camille Paglia serving as your guide with a touch of David Lynch thrown in for good measure. The environmental staging at Chicago's Berger Park Coach House makes it a unique experience you won't soon forget. A benefit performance on September 7 will include pre-show hors d'oeuvres and cocktails with Miss Tippi Hedren herself and a post-show Q&A.

4) Northalsted Market Days
August 10 - 11 in Chicago
This year's line-up for the largest two-day street fair in the Midwest includes Wilson Phillips,
10,000 Maniacs, David Cassidy (TV's The Partridge Family), Erasure's Andy Bell, K Rose, Aaron Carter, Steve Grand ("All-American Boy") and Lynda Carter (TV's Wonder Woman).

5) Hot As Hell Web Series Fan Fest
August 16 - 18 at the Riviera Resort Hotel in Palm Springs
Join the casts and creators of such web series as DeVanity, Fumbling thru the Pieces, THE INN, Pretty and Venice for a weekend of events including panel discussions, special sneak previews, giveaways and more! Scheduled to appear are Michele Lee, Joan Van Ark, Crystal Chappell, Denise Alexander, Shawn Christian, Diane Delano, Dale Raoul, Stacy McQueen, Kirsten Vangsness and others.

6) The Old Friends
Off-Broadway previews begin August 20. Opens September 12 at Signature Theatre's Irene Diamond Stage
Tony Award winner Betty Buckley and Tony Award nominees Veanne Cox, Hallie Foote and Lois Smith star in the world premiere of Horton Foote's play about old friends on opposing sides who are forced to confront issues that have hounded them for generations.

7) Staged Reading of The Whisper
August 22 at Guild Hall in East Hampton, NY
Two-time Tony Award winner and film star Matthew Broderick, Tony Award winner and television star Jane Krakowski, and Academy Award nominee Jennifer Tilly headline a one-night-only, live benefit reading of this new comedy by Eugene Pack. The evening will benefit the Felix Organization, which provides inspiring opportunities and new experiences to enrich the lives of children who are growing up in the foster care system.

8) Kristin Chenoweth
August 23 & 24 at the Hollywood Bowl
The Emmy and Tony-winning actress and recording artist returns to the Hollywood Bowl with her first solo show, featuring the preeminent Los Angeles Philharmonic for a very special evening of music and more.

9) Megan Mullally
August 28 & 29 at The Art House in Provincetown
The two-time Emmy-winning star of TV’s Will & Grace returns to Provincetown by popular demand after her sold-out Art House debut last summer. She will be joined by Sirius/Radio star Seth Rudetsky at the piano.

10) Patti LuPone
August 31 & September 1 at The Art House in Provincetown
The Broadway legend makes a triumphant Provincetown return after debuting at The Art House last summer, with Sirius/Radio star Seth Rudetsky at the piano, for four shows only.
