Remembering Marcia Wallace 1942 - 2013

I will always fondly remember actress Marcia Wallace, who died Friday at age 70, as receptionist Carol Kester on the 1972-78 sitcom, The Bob Newhart Show. Her other television roles included Maggie the maid on the 2001 Comedy Central series, That's My Bush!, kidnapper Annie Wilkes on The Young and the Restless in 2009, and the voice of Bart's teacher Edna Krabappel on The Simpsons (which earned her a 1992 Emmy for Outstanding Voice-Over Performance). She also appeared as a guest star and panelist on many other TV series and game shows, including two 1971 episodes of The Brady Bunch as Marcia's teacher and a saleswoman who sells Jan Brady a wig. Wallace received a second Emmy nomination in 1994 as Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for reprising her role as Carol, who briefly became Murphy Brown's 66th secretary.

I also remember her best from The Bob Newhart Show as well as Match Game and the $25,000 Pyramid, which by coincidence I think is rerunning one of her stints as a celebrity player this week, but almost all the obits I've seen have started off with The Simpsons, I guess it's a generational thing, plus I don't watch The Simpsons but it seems to be her big hullabaloo credit now. Either way she was always a lively and fun presence who will be missed.

Joel, I assume everyone is somewhat familiar with The Simpsons, while many young folks (under 35) have probably never even heard of The Bob Newhart Show - or confuse it with Newhart. So I see it as crediting the more popular pop culture in order for more people to recognize her. But she'll always be Carol to me.
