Remembering Russell Johnson 1924 - 2014

Actor Russell Johnson, who died earlier today at age 89, will always be remembered as "The Professor" on the 1964-67 sitcom, Gilligan's Island. He also appeared in such films as It Came from Outer Space (1953), Roger Corman's Attack of the Crab Monsters (1957) and Rock All Night (1957), and The Greatest Story Ever Told (1965). His other television credits include Black Saddle (a 1959-60 TV western), The Horror at 37,000 Feet (a 1973 TV movie), two Saturday morning cartoons - The New Adventures of Gilligan (1974-77) and Gilligan's Planet (1982-83) - and three reunion films - Rescue from Gilligan's Island (1978), The Castaways on Gilligan's Island (1979), and The Harlem Globetrotters on Gilligan's Island (1981). Johnson also became a full-time volunteer for AIDS research fundraising after his son David was diagnosed (he died from AIDS at age 39 in 1994).

Below are some videos I've selected to celebrate Mr. Johnson's life and career.

A 1988 Gilligan's Island reunion on The Late Show with host Ross Shafer (this was the last time the entire cast was together).

Nice tribute. Just Ginger and Mary Ann left now. As I'm sure you heard Dave Madden aka Reuben Kincaid from The Partridge Family passed away today too. Hopefully the three in a row rule won't take another piece of our collective childhood anytime soon.
