10 Groovy Things to Do in August

Since there are so many groovy plays, musicals, concerts and events, this is my monthly list to help promote a few of them (click on a title for more information or to purchase tickets):

1) Waitress
August 2 - September 27 at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, MA
Featuring music and lyrics by Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles and directed by Diane Paulus, this new musical - based on the 2007 film - tells the story of Jenna (played by Tony Award winner Jessie Mueller), a waitress and expert pie maker who is stuck in a small town and a loveless marriage. When a baking contest in a nearby county offers her a chance at escape, she must choose between her commitments and her dreams.

2) Grey Gardens The Musical
August 4 - 30 at Bay Street Theater in Sag Harbor, NY
Betty Buckley and Rachel York star as Big Edie and "Little" Edie Bouvier Beale, the eccentric aunt and cousin of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, in this musical adaptation of the 1975 documentary. Directed by Michael Wilson, this production also features Howard McGillin, Matt Doyle, James Harkness, Sarah Hunt, Simon Jones, Gracie Beardsley and Dakota Quackenbush.

3) A Moon for the Misbegotten
August 5 - 23 at the Williamstown Theatre Festival
Six-time Tony Award-winner Audra McDonald and Tony Award-nominee Will Swenson take the stage in director Gordon Edelstein's production of Eugene O’Neill’s final masterpiece.

4) The Boy From Oz
August 5 - 30 at Stage 773 in Chicago
Pride Films and Plays concludes its summer season with the musical, The Boy From Oz, which tells the amazing life story of celebrated songwriter and performer Peter Allen. Directed by David Zak, the show stars Chris Logan as Peter Allen, with Luke Meierdiercks as his lover Greg, cabaret star Nancy Hays as Judy Garland, Michelle Lauto as Liza Minnelli, and Michelle McKenzie-Voigt as Peter’s mother Marion.

5) The 34th Annual Northalsted Market Days
August 8 & 9 in Chicago
This year's line-up for the largest two-day street festival in the Midwest includes Salt-N-Pepa, En Vogue, Jack & Jack, All 4 One, Who Is Fancy, Aaron Carter, and Chicago Gay Men's Chorus.

6) Neil Patrick Harris & David Burtka
August 10 at at Provincetown's Art House
Husbands Neil Patrick Harris (Hedwig and the Angry Inch, How I Met Your Mother) and David Burtka (Broadway's It Shoulda Been You) perform together with Sirius XM Radio’s Seth Rudetsky as pianist and host.

7) Idina Menzel
August 16 at Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Chicago
The Tony Award-winning actress (Wicked, If/Then) will sing songs from her Broadway career, her solo records and, of course, Frozen.

8) Billy Porter
August 16, 17 & 18 at the Paramount Room of the Crown & Anchor in Provincetown
The Tony and Grammy award-winning Billy Porter (Kinky Boots) makes his Provincetown debut for three performances only!

9) The Legend of Georgia McBride
August 20 - September 27 at NYC's Lucille Lortel Theatre
Playwright Matthew Lopez and director Mike Donahue make their MCC Theater debuts with Lopez's music-filled comedy about an Elvis impersonator who becomes a drag queen in order to make ends meet. The cast includes Dave Thomas Brown, Wayne Duvall, Matt McGrath, Keith Nobbs and Afton C. Williamson.

10) Jane Krakowski
August 30 at Provincetown's Art House
The Tony Award-winning star of 30 Rock and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt appears in concert with Seth Rudetsky as pianist and host.
