Remembering Ken Howard 1944 - 2016

Actor Ken Howard, who died Wednesday at age 71, was best known as high school basketball coach Ken Reeves on the 1978-81 CBS drama, The White Shadow. He also played lawyer Garrett Boydston on ABC's Dynasty and The Colbys in 1985-86. Other television credits include Adam's Rib (1973), The Manhunter (1974-75), Rage of Angels (1983), The Thorn Birds (1983), It's Not Easy (1983), Rage of Angels: The Story Continues (1986), Melrose Place (1994-98), Crossing Jordan (2001-05), Cane (2007) and 30 Rock (2011-13). He won a Daytime Emmy Award for his performance in the 1980 CBS children's program, The Body Human: Facts for Boys, and a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie for the 2009 HBO film, Grey Gardens.

His Broadway credits include Promises, Promises (1968-69), 1776 (1969), Child's Play (1970) for which he received a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play, Seesaw (1973), Little Black Sheep (1975), The Norman Conquests (1975-76), 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue (1976) and Rumors (1988).

Howard also appeared in many films, including Tell Me That You Love Me, Junie Moon (1970), Such Good Friends (1971), 1776 (in which he reprised his Broadway role as Thomas Jefferson), Second Thoughts (1983), Oscar (1991), Clear and Present Danger (1994), The Net (1995), In Her Shoes (2005), Michael Clayton (2007), Rambo (2008), J. Edgar (2011), The Wedding Ringer (2015) and Joy (2015).

And he was President of the Screen Actors Guild (and later SAG-AFTRA) from 2009 until his death.

Such a wide and varied career! I was never a White Shadow watcher but I loved the short-lived Adam's Rib, although I don't remember that awful opening song that probably drove people away. He and Blythe Danner made a charming couple, it was cool to see them reunited years later when I finally caught up with 1776. It came first but I saw it long after.
