Groovy Comics #5: Brenda Starr, Reporter (1942)

Today we look back at Brenda's exotic adventures and steamy romances of 1942. When we last saw the glamorous newspaper reporter, she was being held prisoner by the "Cupid", a notorious bandit who forced her to bake some biscuits for him and his gang (NOTE: Double-click on strips to enlarge, and click here to read previous Brenda Starr posts).

We now jump ahead to March 1942 when Brenda meets Eric Keller, the new - and very familiar - feature editor of The Flash.

Brenda and her nemesis, Daphne Dimples, have a powder room fight over Brenda's obvious interest in Eric Keller (which may have inspired Patty Duke and Susan Hayward's infamous encounter in 1967's Valley of the Dolls).

It's Brenda's wedding day (August 9) - but, of course, things do not go according to plan (thanks to her friends and enemies).

Comet reporter Hank O'Hair makes her first appearance on August 23, 1942, and the Battle of the Redheads (Brenda vs. Hank) begins.

After Brenda's plan to marry off Hank O'Hair to Elmer Creamsauce does not work out, the rival reporters soon become friends.

1942 ends with Brenda investigating a theatre that is apparently haunted by the ghost of actress Beth Bennett - Brenda's mother!
