Remembering Sam Shepard 1943 - 2017

Playwright and actor Sam Shepard, who died Thursday at age 73, received the 1979 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for his play, Buried Child. He was also nominated for the award in 1983 and 1984 for True West and Fool for Love, respectively. Other plays include Icarus's Mother (1965), La Turista (1967), The Unseen Hand (1969), Operation Sidewinder (1970), Cowboy Mouth (1971), The Tooth of Crime (1972), Geography of a Horse Dreamer (1974), Curse of the Starving Class (1978), A Lie of the Mind (1985), Simpatico (1994) and The Late Henry Moss (2000). He also wrote sketches for Kenneth Tynan's 1969 revue, Oh! Calcutta!

Shepard wrote and directed two feature films - Far North (1988) and Silent Tongue (1994). He also wrote the screenplay for Robert Altman's 1985 adaptation of Fool for Love, and he co-wrote Zabriskie Point (1970), Paris, Texas (1984) and Don't Come Knocking (2005).

He received a 1983 Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his performance as test pilot Chuck Yeager in The Right Stuff. Other acting credits include Days of Heaven (1978), Resurrection (1980), Raggedy Man (1981), Frances (1982), Country (1984), Fool for Love (1985), Crimes of the Heart (1986), Baby Boom (1987), Steel Magnolias (1989), Defenseless (1991), The Pelican Brief (1993), Safe Passage (1994), The Only Thrill (1997), Curtain Call (1998), Hamlet (2000), Black Hawk Down (2001), The Notebook (2004), Don't Come Knocking (2005), Darling Companion (2012) and August: Osage County (2013).

Shepard received 1999 Emmy Award and Golden Globe nominations for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie for his performance as writer Dashiell Hammett in the A&E film, Dash and Lilly. He also played patriarch Robert Rayburn in the 2015-17 Netflix series, Bloodline.

He is survived by three children, including a son and daughter from his longtime relationship (1982-2009) with actress Jessica Lange.
