Remembering Penny Marshall 1943 - 2018



Actress and director Penny Marshall, who died Monday at age 75, received three Golden Globe Award nominations for Best Actress in a Television Series (Comedy or Musical) for her role as Laverne DeFazio on the 1976-83 ABC sitcom, Laverne & Shirley. She directed seven movies - Jumpin' Jack Flash (1986), Big (1988) - which became the first feature film directed by a woman to gross over $100 million - Awakenings (1990), A League of Their Own (1992), Renaissance Man (1994), The Preacher's Wife (1996) and Riding in Cars with Boys (2001). And in 2004, she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

In 1970, she appeared in her first commercial for Head & Shoulders shampoo with Farrah Fawcett.



In 1970, she and George Furth appeared in a Jack in the Box commercial, which was pulled at the last minute because it showed a pregnant woman detouring from the hospital.



She played Oscar's secretary, Myrna Turner, on the ABC sitcom, The Odd Couple, from January 1972 to September 1974 (in her last episode, "The Rain in Spain Falls Mainly in Vain", Myrna married her boyfriend Sheldn, who was played by Rob Reiner, Marshall's husband from 1971-81, and Marshall's real-life brother and sister, Garry and Ronny, played Myrna's siblings).





She played a stewardess in the first episode of the CBS sitcom, The Bob Newhart Show, which aired on September 16, 1972.



In October 1974, she appeared on the CBS daytime game show, Match Game, while starring in the 1974-75 CBS sitcom, Paul Sand in Friends and Lovers (which was canceled after only 15 episodes).



She played Mary's neighbor Paula Kovacs in two episodes of CBS's The Mary Tyler Moore Show during its sixth season (1975-76).




On October 25, 1975, she appeared on NBC's Saturday Night Live with her husband, Rob Reiner, who was the episode's host.



She and Cindy Williams first played Laverne DeFazio and Shirley Feeney on the ABC sitcom, Happy Days, on November 11, 1975.



She played Laverne DeFazio in 178 episodes of the 1976-83 ABC sitcom, Laverne & Shirley, including Season 2's "Angels of Mercy" and "Guinea Pigs" and Season 5's "The Diner".





Dick Clark interviewed her on ABC's American Bandstand on August 7, 1976.



She was a guest on the first episode of Captain and Tennille's ABC variety show on September 20, 1976.



She and Cindy Williams appeared in the "Live from Mardi Gras"special of NBC's Saturday Night Live on February 20, 1977.



Dick Clark interviewed her on his NBC special, Dick Clark and a Cast of Thousands, which aired on September 6, 1978.



She played Laverne DeFazio in the pilot episode of the ABC sitcom, Mork & Mindy, which aired on September 14, 1978.



She was a guest on the ABC summer series, Carol Burnett & Company, on September 1, 1979.



She played herself on an episode of Tom Hanks' ABC sitcom, Bosom Buddies, which aired on January 22, 1982.



She played herself in an episode of the ABC sitcom, Taxi, on January 22, 1983.



She made her first and only guest appearance on NBC's Late Night with David Letterman on February 1, 1984.



In 1988, Today anchor Jane Pauley interviewed her about Big.



She appeared on the ABC special, The Laverne & Shirley Reunion, on May 22, 1995.





On December 14, 1996, she was a special guest on NBC's Saturday Night Live with host Rosie O'Donnell and musical guest Whitney Houston.




She was a guest on The Rosie O'Donnell Show on May 27, 1997.



She was a guest on the Fox series, MADtv, on November 10, 2001.



She and Cindy Williams discussed Laverne & Shirley in an Archive of American Television interview on August 7, 2013.
